Located:

North West of Mount Robson Provincial Park. A remote wilderness along the continental divide. In the Hart, Continental and Park Ranges of the spectacular Rocky Mountains. Kakwa Park is 127,960 ha. in size.

Hiking:

Distance is approximately 30 km. easy hiking to Base Camp.
Many more kilometres of hiking can be enjoyed from camp as well. (60 - 100 km round trip).

Elevation:

  • Gain is approximately 700 meters over 12 km. (very easy grade).
  • Trail Head 1000 m.
  • Continental Divide 1700 m.
  • Kakwa Lake (base camp) 1500 m.
   

Wildlife:

Inhabitants of the area include Caribou, Elk, Moose, Deer, Black and Grizzly Bear, Rocky Mountain Sheep, Mountain Goats, Wolves, Marten, Fisher, Wolverine, Marmot, and Porcupine. Most large lakes contain Rainbow Trout. Many song birds and waterfowl are evident, seasonal alpine flowers, mushrooms, moss & lichen are abundant

Getting Started:

An early morning Meet & Greet at Strider Adventures in Prince George. All equipment and llamas are loaded for an approximate four hour drive to the trailhead. The journey will take us through the North Cariboo and Rocky Mountains crossing the Fraser River as we travel North and East of Prince George. As we approach the trailhead views of Mt. Dimsdale, Pommel Mt., Mt. Sir Alexander and Nilan Peak welcome us.

Our Trip:

The hike begins along the McGregor River, a gentle grade and great views of the lower buttresses of Mt. Sir Alexander and prominent features such as Obelisk Peak and some of the surrounding glaciers.

Our route takes us past Mt. Wishaw through the McGregor Pass and over the Continental Divide. Excellent hiking continues as we pass Muriel Lake on our way to Base Camp at Kakwa Lake.

Camp:

Camp is situated in a sub-alpine meadow at the south end of Kakwa Lake surrounded by breathtaking views of no less than 8 of the most spectacular peaks in the Rocky Mountains.

From here there are many opportunities to pursue various interests including day hikes to beautiful alpine lakes, meadow strolls, summit seeking, fishing, rock climbing ranging from novice to very challenging, wildlife viewing, photography or simply relaxing in spectacular surroundings.

Meals:

All meals are freshly prepared, ample and delicious. We are sure your appetite will be satisfied with the variety of meals and snacks provided.

Great Adventure:

Strider Adventures tailors all it's adventures for various interests and abilities. Anyone capable of hiking approximately 15 km. a day will enjoy this hike.

Very suitable for active seniors and children of at least nine or ten years of age. It's also a great opportunity for climbers and mountaineers to access superb Rocky Mountain backcountry.

Typical Itinerary

Day One:

  • 7:00 am, Meet & Greet
  • Load equipment & llamas
  • Four hour drive to trailhead
  • Lunch at trailhead
  • Approximate 4 to 5 hour hike to overnight camp

Day Two:

  • Hike 4 to 5 hours to Kakwa Lake base camp

Days 3, 4, 5, 6

  • Day activities including lunch
  • Day hikes to Mt. Ruth, La Glace Lake, Babette Lake, Mt. Jan Munroe
  • Dinner at 6 pm
  • Evening campfire visits
  • Departure from base camp is on the afternoon prior to the final day

Final Day:

  • Hike 3 to 4 hours to trailhead
  • Early breakfast
  • return to Prince George
  • Final BBQ and farewell - 7 pm
